Originally a small workman’s cottage, the client already had a large garden extension at the back but this was accessed through a narrow kitchen with an adjacent lightwell roofed over to form a storage area. The challenge was to give a greater feeling of space and proportion. On entering the house, a fully mirrored wall immediately doubles the size of the narrow hall. Part of the through living room was taken to form a utility/storage room. This improves the proportions of the Living Room which is no longer long and narrow. By relocating the storage, the lightwell is opened up into the kitchen allowing the working part of the kitchen to be away from the circulation route. Alice customised Magnet units to create a very special kitchen with two walk-in larders giving a huge amount of storage. The alterations give space and proportion to the house.
