Stamford Brook
Originally part of the house, known locally as Pissarro’s House as Camille Pissarro lived there, the studio is in separate ownership. The challenge was to extend into a courtyard at the front of the property to create a new entrance and larger kitchen in the resulting space next to the artist’s studio. As the perimeter walls are boundary walls, there was very limited possibilities for any windows. Mindful of the significance of the property, Alice designed a large, hipped lantern light within a flat roof to enclose the space. The pyramidical shape of the lantern reduces the bulk of the extension and it sits comfortably with the gable end of the original studio. Not only is the new room flooded with light, but the lantern gives an element of surprise when opening the new front door.
